Students can help spruce up Touch of Nature

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. – In celebration of National Volunteer Week and Earth Day, all Southern Illinois University Carbondale students can participate in a spruce-up project Saturday, April 14 at SIUC's Touch of Nature Environmental Center.

A bus will depart from the Student Center at 9 a.m., taking volunteers to Touch of Nature, where they will develop a community garden, trim trails, clear bushes, plant new shrubs, clean the main cabin, and anything else necessary to "get the place looking good for the spring and summer," said Mythili Rundblad, SIUC Student Development coordinator.

"Typically, April is so busy but this event celebrates and recognizes volunteers and helps beautify Touch of Nature," Rundblad said. "Students love being outside."

Topping off the event is free pizza for all volunteers.

The Saluki Volunteer Corps is the event sponsor and The Beautify Southern Illinois Student Alliance is assisting, as is the Land of Lincoln AmeriCorps team. Funding is through an Illinois Campus Compact grant. Call 618/453-5714 for more information.

In the event of rain, the project will be rescheduled.
