Auction to raise money for School of Art and Design

by Sun Min

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Add to your art collection while raising money for an important cause at the "Art Over Easy 2" auction, benefiting the School of Art and Design, part of the College of Liberal Arts at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Proceeds from the auction go to the Art Development Fund, New Building Fund, facilities enhancements and scholarships.

The silent orphan auction is set for 6:30-10 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1 and the live auction will take place at 7 p.m. on the same day. All events take place at the Surplus Gallery in Carbondale's old Good Luck Glove Factory.

That evening, the School of Art and Design will also honor SIU President Glenn W. Poshard and his wife, Jo Poshard, for their art advocacy.

Following the Poshards' lead, the public will get a chance to support the arts by bidding on prints, ceramics, paintings, glass, photographs, jewelry and much more, during the auction.

The collections will feature work by recognized artists, members of the community and SIUC alumni, students and faculty. As a special treat, many of those contributors will attend the auction and mingle with guests.

"We're really connecting with the community to educate them about the art being created here in Southern Illinois and we want to showcase it," said Kay M. Zivkovich, assistant director of the School of Art and Design.

Art Advisory Board Co-chairs Linda Dunn and Larry Weatherford said their goal is to raise $25,000 for the school, which is a cause that is close to their hearts. "I'm a proud graduate of the School of Art and Design and I'm honored to be a part of this," Weatherford said.

"We feel that art should be shared," Dunn said. "If it's hiding under your bed, what good does that do? Make it available to everyone. Everybody needs some art in their home."
