by Tim Crosby

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- A senior in speech communication at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is the winner of an award reserved for an outstanding student in public relations.

Joshua Kauffman, of Elwood, received the Elizabeth Lance Public Relations Student Award. Nathan Stucky, associate professor and chair of the speech communication department, in the College of Liberal Arts, cited Kauffman's academic achievements and leadership role in the SIUC chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America in making the announcement.

The award honors Elizabeth Lance Toth, a major force in setting up the public relations program at SIUC. She now holds a faculty position at Syracuse University and remains one of the nation's leading scholars in her field.

The award includes a $100 scholarship.

Kauffman is the son of Neal and Roxanne Kauffman of 17650 Alice Court, Elwood.

Promoting excellence in undergraduate academics is among the goals of Southern at 150: Building Excellence Through Commitment, the blueprint the University is following as it approaches its 150th anniversary in 2019.
