Fire damages apartment building; no one hurt

by Tom Woolf

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- An early morning fire today (Feb. 21) caused significant damage to an eight-unit building in Southern Illinois University Carbondale's Evergreen Terrace apartment complex on Pleasant Hill Road.

Twenty people lived in the building, including six children. There were no injuries.

Lisa M. Marks, associate director of University Housing, said families and couples occupied all eight apartments and are being relocated today to other Evergreen Terrace units or to units at the University-owned Southern Hills apartment complex on South Wall Street.

The Carbondale Fire Department was alerted at 2:30 a.m., and extinguished the blaze by about 4 a.m. The blaze started in the kitchen of a downstairs apartment when grease caught fire.

Marks said the building "will be closed for quite some time" due to smoke, fire and water damage.
