by Tim Crosby

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Students and parents from throughout the state will converge on Southern Illinois University Carbondale next week for the first University open house of 2006.

The event is set for 9 a.m. Monday, Feb. 20, at the SIUC Student Center.

Angie Royal, special events coordinator for undergraduate admissions, said organizers expect 1,200 to 1,500 students, parents and counselors to attend. The event caters mainly to high school juniors and seniors and transfer students from community colleges.

Representatives from every college and almost every major program on campus, as well as financial aid advisers, housing officials and other campus services will be on hand to answer questions, Royal said. Visitors also can attend counseling programs for undecided majors and learn how to join freshman interest groups.

Admissions personnel will provide campus and housing tours and select departments will provide facility tours as well, Royal said. Housing tours include trips to Thompson Point and Neely Hall.

Early bird campus tours begin at 8:30 a.m., with additional campus tours running 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Housing tours run 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The admissions office holds five open houses each school year. The next two such events are set for March 25 and July 21.

Promoting excellence in undergraduate academics is among the goals of Southern at 150: Building Excellence Through Commitment, the blueprint the University is following as it approaches its 150th anniversary in 2019.
