Undergraduates can enter research competition

by K.C. Jaehnig

CARBONDALE, Ill -- Sponsors of REACH, Southern Illinois University Carbondale's undergraduate research and creative activity program, are seeking entries for their annual award competition.

REACH (Research-Enriched Academic Challenge) awards provide as much as $1,500 to support undergraduate student projects involving one-on-one work with a faculty mentor. Students prepare proposals outlining what they want to do and who will help them; a faculty panel composed of representatives from each college makes the selection. In addition, students may opt to receive a yearlong assistantship for 10 hours weekly with their faculty sponsors.

Proposal guidelines and application packets appear on the REACH Web site at http://www.siu.edu/~reach. Academic departments also have these materials. Proposals must reach the Office of Research and Development Administration at C-206 in Woody Hall by 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26.

Those with questions may call Jo Nast or Paula Shoemaker at 618/453-4540. Reach them by e-mail at jonast@siu.edu or paulas@siu.edu.

Promoting excellence in undergraduate education is among the goals of Southern at 150: Building Excellence Through Commitment, the blueprint for the development of the University by the time it celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2019.
