SIUC physicist invited to deliver addresses

by Paula Davenport

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Physicist Andrei Kolmakov — an assistant professor at Southern Illinois University Carbondale — is the recipient of invitations to deliver keynote addresses at two international conferences.

The first, Eurosensors XIX, is meeting this week in Barcelona, Spain. And he will deliver the keynote speech at the spring meeting of the Material Research Society, April 17-21, in San Francisco.

Kolmakov, who joined the SIUC faculty this year, is an expert on nanotechnology, surface science and condensed matter.

He earned a doctoral degree at the Russian Research Center known as the Kurchatov Institute and the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology in 1995.

"This is a big honor for me and I believe these kinds of events provide nice exposure for our physics department, the College of Science and help SIUC's reputation as a growing research university," Kolmakov said.

Celebrating faculty excellence is among the goals of Southern at 150: Building Excellence Through Commitment, the long-range plan the University is following as it nears its 150th anniversary in 2019.
