SIUC architecture camp builds design confidence

by Pete Rosenbery

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- High school and middle school students interested in architecture and what architects do attended Southern Illinois University Carbondale's annual architecture summer camp July 17-22.

Each student learned about architecture and design, participated in walking field trips on campus, worked in computer graphics on design projects, structural projects and spatial projects, cast concrete and toured various historically significant buildings in St. Louis, Mo. School of Architecture Professor Jon Davey has conducted the camp for elementary through high school students for 17 years.

The annual event drew 25 students from around the country. Concrete casting, which requires students to use tile in making designs in concrete, harks back to the style of 19th-century Spanish architect Antonio Gaudi and gives students a better understanding of construction, history and design. Students also learned structural design by building bridges sound enough to hold a watermelon.

Offering education-related camps is among the goals of Southern at 150: Building Excellence Through Commitment, the blueprint for the development of the University by the time it celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2019.
