by Paula Davenport

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Hey kids: Mark you calendars now for three very cool activities at the University Museum in July. The museum is located on Southern Illinois University Carbondale's campus.

The "Completely Free Thursday Morning Programs" will run from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. July 7, July 14 and July 21. The museum is in the north wing of Faner Hall, located behind Shryock Auditorium.

Individuals and groups are welcome. However, space is limited to 15 participants, ages seven-14. Reserve your spot by calling the museum at 618/453-5388,

Here's a look at the lineup, by date:

• July 7: Sculpture Mania. Bring five objects to recycle into a Styrofoam sculpture you'll create.

• July 14: Riddles of the Museum: Scavenger Hunt. You'll follow riddles to find museum objects, write short descriptions of them and win photo stickers for your "Museum Riddle Book."

• July 21: My Own Museum Show. You'll choose images of museum artifacts from around the world and create a museum exhibit booklet. Please bring three small images with you for the project.

Providing cultural outreach is one of the goals of Southern at 150: Building Excellence Through Commitment, the blueprint the University is following as it approaches its 150th birthday in 2019.
