Celebrate Women scholarship benefit is March 9

by Paula M. Davenport

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Spice up your work week by attending the upcoming "9th Celebrate Women" scholarship benefit from 2 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 9, at the University Museum at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

You'll enjoy curator-guided tours of works by famous modern female artists, live music by the female band "Loose Gravel," a wide array of appetizers and desserts, a film screening and discussion, a silent auction and a closing ceremony to herald accomplishments of SIUC female faculty, staff and women's scholarship recipients.

The event is open to all. Admission is $10 adults and $5 for students. Tickets will be available at the door.

Among this year's silent auction items will be books, T-shirts, restaurants gift certificates, theater tickets, artworks, SIU athletic apparel and other items.

Appetizers along with trays of meat, cheese, fruits and veggies, desserts, beverages and wines will be available, too.

And there's a new facet to the fundraiser for fitness buffs this year: You are welcome to participate in a wellness walk on campus beginning at 3:45 p.m. Monday or Tuesday, March 7-8. Walkers should provide at least $10 in sponsorships and in exchange will receive complimentary tickets to the Wednesday reception.

Details are available from Connie Shanahan at mshan@Midwest.net or 618/549-3090.

Proceeds from all the events help to fund women's scholarships at SIUC.

Sponsors include the museum, Women's Caucus, Women's Studies, the Carbondale Branch of the AAUW, University Women's Professional Advancement Group and Tasis Karayiannis.
