Free playoff tickets available to 500 students

by Tom Woolf

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Free tickets are available for up to 500 Southern Illinois University Carbondale students for the top-ranked Saluki football team's first playoff game on Saturday, Nov. 27.

Athletics department officials are anticipating the Gateway Conference champions will capture a home game when ESPN News announces the bracket for the Division I-AA playoffs at noon on Sunday, Nov. 21. Saluki fans can watch the selection show with the team in the Student Center ballrooms; the doors open at 11:30 a.m.

Chancellor Walter V. Wendler at this time is making 500 tickets available to students through SIU Foundation funds.

"Since our students support our athletics program through student fees, which we very much appreciate, this is the least we could do," Wendler said. "We want to make sure every seat in McAndrew Stadium is filled so we can give Coach Jerry Kill and his players the support they deserve."

Students may come to the athletics ticket office in Lingle Hall beginning at noon on Thursday, Nov. 18, to request a voucher for the game. They then will exchange the voucher for a ticket on game day at the stadium. Each student must display a valid student ID to receive one ticket voucher. Students cannot receive multiple vouchers.

The ticket office is open until 4 p.m. on Thursday. Hours on Friday, Nov. 19, are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Hours next week are 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Nov. 22, 23 and 24 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 26.

Promoting Saluki pride is among the goals of Southern at 150: Building Excellence Through Commitment, the blueprint for the development of the University by the time it celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2019.
