Horse riding workshop set for Oct. 23

by K.C. Jaehnig

CARBONDALE, Ill. - - A workshop designed to improve riding skills on all manner of horses, no matter the riding style, will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, at the Southern Illinois University Carbondale Horse Center, 2194 Union Hill Road.

Horse trainer Mark W. Schwarm, an SIUC graduate, relies on respect and communication in his work. He regularly leads clinics designed to share what he has learned with students and with clients in racing, dressage and ranching. His workshops also focus on helping riders solve specific problems they may be having with their own horses.

"He has had a diverse background, focusing on educating horses and also riders," said Stephanie A. Speiser, an assistant instructor in the animal science, food and nutrition department.

"His philosophy is what separates him from most trainers."

Riders, who must show proof that their horses have negative Coggins test results, will pay $60 for the session. Those who want to audit will pay $15. Lunch is not provided, though participants may bring their own.

While pre-registration is not required, organizers would like to know how many horse-and-rider combinations to expect for planning purposes. Registrants may call Speiser at the horse center at 618/453-2024 or 618/453-1773, or they may reach her through e-mail at sspeiser@siu.edu.
