SIUC news events for Sept. 26-Oct. 2

News directors, editors and reporters covering Southern Illinois University Carbondale: To facilitate your planning for next week, here's a listing of events and activities scheduled on campus or that are University-related. We will provide these listings each Friday and are happy to help you arrange coverage.

Tuesday, Sept. 28

  • 8:30 a.m., Area agents from the State Farm Insurance Co., will present a major gift to the University that will fund nine new scholarships and computer equipment to benefit technology career majors in three colleges. The presentation, in the Student Center's John W. Corker Lounge, will open the fall campus-wide Career Fair, in the Student Center ballrooms. More than 100 employers will be on hand at the Career Fair, offering reporters opportunities for stories related to the economy and what fields may be growing.

Thursday, Sept. 30

  • The Administration of Justice Career and Internship Fair, set for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Student Center Ballrooms, presents another opportunity for economy-related stories. Representatives from 25 to 35 businesses and agencies will be in attendance to offer students and area residents information on internship, job and networking opportunities.

Friday, Oct. 1

  • Grab some video or stand-alone photos as faculty, staff, alumni and community members gather during Homecoming weekend to mark the end of one era and the beginning of another. A community photo in front of Morris Library at 2 p.m. will capture the library of today as preparations move forward for the renovation and expansion of the facility -- the largest capital project in SIUC history.

Saturday, Oct. 2

  • "Saluki Celebration" is the theme for this year's Homecoming festivities, and the annual Homecoming parade steps off at 9:30 a.m. at the corner of Mill Street and University Avenue. The parade will travel north on University to Cherry Street, then go south on Illinois Avenue to McAndrew Stadium. More than 100 units will participate.
