SIUC students to stage mock homeless community

by Tom Woolf

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale students will abandon their creature comforts this weekend to draw attention to the plight of the homeless.

Students plan to create a mock homeless community on the lawns in front of the Mae Smith and Schneider residence halls on the campus' east side beginning at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 17. They will spend the night in cardboard boxes.

Participants also will collect canned food and used clothing to donate to Carbondale's Good Samaritan House.

The Mae Smith Council is organizing the event, and invites students living on campus or who belong to Registered Student Organizations to participate. For more information, contact council adviser Chad Fehr at 618/536-1047.
