Community members can sit in on classes

by Elizabeth Lively

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Imagine a college class without tests or pressure to perform while offering a rare chance to soak up all the course material for only $25.

You may enroll in just such a class at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Classes start Jan. 12.

SIUC sponsors a special Community Listener's Program -- which allows anyone not presently enrolled in another college course for credit -- to sit in on a class of their choosing.

Participants pay only $25 a class and must seek the instructor's consent.

They receive a courtesy card to Morris Library and may use the University Career Center, too. They will not accrue college credits, however.

Providing continuing education opportunities is among the goals of Southern at 150, the blueprint for the development of the University by the time it celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2019.
