SIUC news events for Dec. 8-14

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- News directors, editors and reporters covering Southern Illinois University Carbondale: To facilitate your planning for next week, here's a listing of events and activities scheduled on campus or that are University-related. We will provide these listings each Friday and are happy to help you arrange coverage.

Monday, Dec. 8

 

  • Saluki Finals Finish, 6 p.m.-midnight, Student Recreation Center (also Tuesday, Dec. 9, 6 p.m.-midnight). Faculty and staff serve food and beverages to students studying for final examinations. The idea is to give students extra time to work off stress, study or just relax at the end of the day.

Wednesday, Dec. 10

 

  • Neuropharmacologist Donald M. Caspary, winner of SIUC's 2003 Outstanding Scholar award, will talk about the ways that changes in the inner ear affect the brain in a free lecture that begins at 4 p.m. in the University Museum auditorium at the north end of Faner Hall. A public reception will follow at 5 p.m.

Saturday, Dec. 13

 

  • Commencement ceremonies, 9: 30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., at the Arena. The morning ceremony includes the colleges of Agriculture Sciences, Applied Sciences and Arts, Business and Administration, Education and Human Services and Engineering. The afternoon ceremony includes the colleges of Liberal Arts, Mass Communication and Media Arts, and Science, the Graduate School and the School of Law. Chancellor Walter V. Wendler will speak at both ceremonies.

  • Air Force ROTC commissioning ceremony, Student Center fourth floor video lounge. There is a reception beginning at 4 p.m., followed by the ceremony at 5 p.m. The new graduates will enter active duty as second lieutenants within 60 days.
