Saluki Finals Finish set for Dec. 7-9

by Tom Woolf

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The folks at Southern Illinois University Carbondale's Student Recreation Center next week will dole out a ton of food and drink to students frantically studying for final exams.

Literally.

The fifth annual Saluki Finals Finish is set for Sunday through Tuesday, Dec. 7-9. The rec center will be open until midnight all three days, and faculty members and staff from throughout campus will serve up free food and beverages from 6 p.m. until close. The idea is to give students additional time to work off stress, study for finals or just relax at the end of the day. In addition, some faculty members are holding study or review sessions during the event.

The main course on Sunday is sub sandwiches, followed by pizza on Monday and tacos on Tuesday. The menu includes plenty of fruits and vegetables, soda and sports drinks.

Volunteers will serve around 3,000 students over the three evenings. And the students do work up an appetite. They'll consume 360 pounds of bananas, 100 pounds of apples, 100 pounds of oranges, 75 pounds of carrots and 50 pounds of celery, in addition to the beverages, pizza, subs and tacos.

Sponsors include the colleges of Agricultural Sciences, Applied Sciences and Arts, Business and Administration, Education and Human Services, Engineering, Liberal Arts, Mass Communication and Media Arts, and Science; Library Affairs; the Graduate School; Office of Intramural-Recreational sports; and the schools of law and medicine.
